Air travel keeps pushing further, with some flights now nearing a full day in the sky. Several airlines currently operate routes that stretch across multiple continents nonstop. A new wave of ultra long flights is also set to launch soon.
The world's longest flight today
Singapore Airlines runs the world's current longest commercial flight route. It connects New York's JFK Airport with Singapore Changi Airport directly. The journey spans 15,332 kilometres without any stops along the way. Eastbound flights take roughly 18 hours and 40 minutes to complete. Return flights heading west can stretch up to 19 hours total. Singapore Airlines uses the Airbus A350-900ULR for this demanding route. This aircraft carries extra fuel capacity built for ultra long range travel. The cabin only offers business and premium economy seating options.
A second record breaking Singapore route
Singapore Airlines also flies a nearly identical route from Newark to Singapore. This path covers 15,329 kilometres between the two cities. Together, these two routes rank as the longest nonstop flights worldwide. No other airline currently operates anything close to this distance.
Other major long haul contenders
Qantas operates a major route between Perth and London Heathrow. This flight covers approximately 14,498 kilometres using a Boeing 787 aircraft. It holds the record for the longest route flown by that aircraft type. Flight times can stretch up to 17 hours and 30 minutes. This route also made history as the first nonstop link between Australia and Europe. Qatar Airways runs another major long haul route from Doha to Auckland. Outbound flights to Auckland take up to 16 hours in the air. Return flights back to Doha can reach 17 hours and 10 minutes.
Project Sunrise set to break new records
Qantas plans to launch even longer flights through its Project Sunrise initiative. These routes will connect Sydney with both London and New York directly. Flight times are expected to range between 19 and 22 hours. Total distance on these routes will approach 18,000 kilometres each way. Once active, these flights will rank among the longest in commercial aviation. Qantas will use specially configured Airbus A350-1000 aircraft for these journeys. The cabins will feature improved lighting designed around passenger comfort. Dedicated wellbeing spaces will also appear throughout the aircraft interior.
Timeline for the new Sydney to London route
Qantas confirmed plans for ticket sales on the Sydney to London route. Sales are expected to begin in February 2027 for eager travelers. Actual flights on this historic route will start in October 2027. This launch will mark a major milestone in ultra long haul aviation.
